Building a complete sail set for a traditional Turkish gulet is a process that requires both technical knowledge and great craftsmanship. In this article we walk through our journey of completing a gulet's sails from scratch.
1. Measurement and Analysis
Every project begins with examining the boat's hull and rig. The gulet's rig structure, mast height and deck layout are measured one by one. These measurements ensure the sails fit the boat precisely.
2. Design and Fabric Selection
A fabric is chosen that preserves the traditional look while offering modern performance. Dacron is the most preferred choice for gulets due to its durability and reasonable cost. Colour and stitching details are also decided at this stage.
3. Cutting
Following the measurements, the fabric is carefully marked and cut on the large cutting table. Because gulet sails cover a large area, this stage requires great care and experience.
4. Stitching and Assembly
The cut panels are joined with industrial sewing machines. Corners are reinforced, and reefing and attachment points are added. Every seam is stitched carefully to last for years.
5. Testing and Delivery
The finished sails are tested on the boat for final checks. They are then delivered to the vessel, and the crew is briefed on their use when needed.
